From a post-Soviet state to a European power
Over the past 15 years, Ukraine has evolved from a country with a fragile prospect of European integration into a symbol of the struggle for European unity. The last five years have been especially significant, driving change not only in Ukraine but also structural developments across Europe.

Shifting geopolitical orientations in Central Asia
A pro-Russia orientation has been a stable feature of Central Asia since the region’s independence in 1991. While of crucial importance for Europe, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 initially seemed to be a far-away conflict that would not concern Central Asia directly. And yet, Central Asia’s positive relations with Russia soon began to change.

Ausgabe 004/2026

The battle for Ukrainian identity
Russia’s war against Ukraine is being fought not only on the battlefield, but also in museums, archives and cultural institutions struggling to preserve the country’s historical and cultural memory. From the ruins of Mariupol to diaspora institutions in New York, a growing network of historians, archivists and cultural workers is documenting destruction while resisting the erasure of Ukraine’s past.

A father’s last recordings before genocide
A forgotten VHS tape found in a Belgrade second-hand shop became the starting point for an intimate and deeply human story about war, memory and loss. In The Srebrenica Tape – From Dad, for Alisa, director Chiara Sambuchi follows a daughter’s journey to reconnect with the father she lost during the Bosnian War, while confronting the silences and traumas that still shape lives three decades after the genocide.

Ausgabe 003/2026

The politics of reforming Ukraine’s wartime lifeline
Ukraine has a unitary railway system. The state-owned company, Ukrzaliznytsia, has a monopoly on the railways and operates passenger and freight services. This means competition is virtually non-existent. Such a model is not accepted in the European Union.

New threats of war and how Europe should respond
A review of Wer verteidigt Europa? Die neuen Kriegsgefahren und was wir tun müssen, um uns zu schützen (Who Defends Europe? New Threats of War and What We Must Do to Protect Ourselves) written by: Jana Puglierin. Publisher: Rowohlt.

  • From a post-Soviet state to a European power
Over the past 15 years, Ukraine has evolved from a country with a fragile prospect of European integration into a symbol of the struggle for European unity. The last five years have been especially significant, driving change not only in Ukraine but also structural developments across Europe.
  • Shifting geopolitical orientations in Central Asia

And yet, Central Asia’s positive relations with Russia soon began to change.
  • How Russia turned terrorism into a tool of power
Counterterrorism narratives in Russia have become a justification for centralizing the Kremlin’s power. Unity, discipline and loyalty became security requirements. The more terrorism was framed as a national survival issue, the easier it became to portray pluralism, criticism, and civil society activism as potential vulnerabilities.
