  • What Is It? What Is It Worth?
OBJECT LESSON: Filson Tin Cloth Cruiser Coat WHAT TO KNOW: In 1897, Clinton C. Filson founded his clothing company, C.C. Filson’s Pioneer Alaska Clothing and Blanket Manufacturers, in Seattle. Aimed at providing protective clothing for Pacific Northwest settlers seeking fortune during the Yukon Gold Rush, the brand later became (and still is!) a staple for avid outdoorsmen and timbermen. Filson’s first patented and most notable piece was the all-weather Cruiser coat, inspired by timber “cruisers” who searched for harvestable timber. The coats were typically made of Mackinaw wool or Tin Cloth (a cotton treated with an oil and wax finish to protect against wind and water), like the 1950s-era one pictured here.
